Chacom Antique X309, Sandblasted Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked [SOLD OUT]

Description

Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – Cha for Chapuis, and Com for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.

Chacom’s Antique line was one of pure and elegant simplicity. The bowls were sandblasted and stained a very dark, near-black, umber (i.e., reddish brown) and the stems were jet-black vulcanite. It’s a design combination that has endured for just about as long as sandblasted pipes have existed, and there’s a good reason for that. It just works. One of the added benefits, however, of Chacom being such a powerhouse pipe company in the birthplace of briar – Saint-Claude, France – is that they have an unrivaled supply of well-seasoned briar and stummels. So, you can guarantee that a pipe like this not only looks great, but it will also smoke fantastically well. I was very close to keeping this one, as I am partial to Canadian shapes, but then again, I do have about a dozen Canadians already, in addition to all the other pipes…

This Chacom is also completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to ease in the first smokes.
