Savinelli Capt Warren Sandblasted Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously produced high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

One of the most fun aspects of this job is getting to talk about rare pipes or pipe designs, especially when they have an interesting backstory. As such, allow me to introduce the ‘Captain Warren,’ or rather, Savinelli’s own version of the shape, the Capt Warren. Who was Warren? That is something pipe historians debate. He may have been American president Calvin Coolidge’s Attorney General, but he might also have been a British naval officer. The shape itself was born around the turn of the 20th century and bears similarities with other shapes, such as the Lyon and the General Dawes. All have a tall bowl and a shank that extends from near the top of the bowl, rather than the bottom. The chamber itself, however, is removable, like that of a calabash. These pipes were all the rage a century ago, but as with so many things, they have been almost entirely lost to time.

The condition is very good, especially for the age of the pipe. While Savinelli’s Capt Warren is not likely to have been one of the earliest iterations of the shape, it has nonetheless not been in production for many, many decades. There are some handling marks around the sides of the bowl, and a small patch of rim darkening on the removable chamber, but these are superficial imperfections on an otherwise fascinating rarity.
