GBD Conquest New Standard 9579 Panel Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]

Description
GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought and moved to London at the beginning of the 20th century, were it continued to produce high-quality and highly desirable pipes.
What an interesting shape this GBD is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this model before. I don’t recall seeing many foursquare or paneled pokers from any pipe maker, come to think of it. GBD have pulled it off surprisingly well, in any case. Judging by the silver rondelle on the stem, this one was made prior to GBD’s merger with Cadogan Investments Ltd., so I suppose they had more freedom back then.
So, it’s a panel poker of sorts. ‘Conquest’ was one of GBD’s designations for plus-sized pipes. As can be noted, this one is six inches in length, so pretty large, but not unmanageable for the average smoker. It’s also much lighter tan is to be expected and could possibly even be clenched, with appropriate care. The condition is great. The orange-red finish is without smudges or handling marks, with only the inner lip of the beveled rim having very minor patches of darkening. The vulcanite stem is similarly free from tooth indentations or oxidation. A great, rare, pipe from the famed French-English brand.
