Unsmoked Frasorteret Partially Sandblasted Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Danish [SOLD OUT]

Frasorteret was one of the many pipe brands made in the workshop of the legendary Preben Holm. Though he would tragically pass away at the age of 42, Holm was one of the pioneering figures in the ‘Danish design’ movement in 20th century pipe-making, a movement that still dominates the high-grade pipe scene. By hand-shaping his pipes on a belt sander, Holm was able to make the most of the patterns of grain hidden within briar, creating spectacular works of pipe art that looked just as well as they smoked. Owing to Holm’s untimely passing, his pipes are even more highly sought after than they were during his lifetime.

I love Preben Holm pipes – they really are all unique, which was one of the reasons that the ‘Danish fancy’ or ‘Danish freehand’ style became so popular in the 1970s. Well, that and because Holm’s pipes are simply exceptional combinations of form and function. This one has a nice floral shape to it, like a tulip or a lily, while also being pretty rough and rugged. It’s clear that the combination of sandblasting and smooth polish has been used to highlight the best qualities of the briar, meaning there’s a patchwork of ring and straight grain all over the stummel.

The pipe is also – miraculously – unsmoked. A real rarity when it comes to Preben Holm’s output.
