Peterson’s Deluxe 608, Smooth Straight Pot Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
While I can’t pinpoint exactly when this pipe was made, it looks to be an older Peterson, as the ‘Deluxe’ name in the modern Peterson catalog is a line of pipes with silver bands, which this does not have. A pipe doesn’t necessarily need silver to shine, though. This one must have been made from an excellent block of briar, as much of the stummel positively glows with natural, bird’s-eye grain patterns, including the bowl exterior. This must be why Peterson decided to give the pipe a simple, light brown stain that would not smother the grain patterns underneath. The pipe is also in an excellent condition, with the beauty of the grain not sullied by handling marks, and with only a hair of rim darkening.
Note: this Peterson has a fishtail, rather than P-lip, stem.
