With its origins in an 1858 collaboration between Jean-Baptiste Choquin and Gustave Butz, Butz-Choquin ultimately become one of the premier smoking pipe companies in 20^th century France. The brand is known both for its stylish variations on traditional English-French shapes and for its exploration of atypical and elaborate finishes. The brand is also known for its collaborations with celebrated French pipe-makers, such as Paul Lanier and Alain Albuisson, who made some of Butz-Choquin’s high-grade pipes for the company.

Speaking of high-grade pipes, this particular Butz-Choquin is just such an example. The designation in the nomenclature, Maître-Pipier, meaning ‘master pipe-maker,’ signals that this pipe was made by either Paul Lanier or Alain Albuisson. As such, it is one of BC’s top of the line offerings, and would have cost the equivalent of several hundred euros when it was first sold. Looking at it, one can see why. It’s a beautiful, hand-made calabash-style pipe with what looks to be a brass spigot connecting the stummel and stem. The stummel itself has a wonderful mixture of cross-grain and bird’s-eye grain, which is emphasized by a contrast stain of various reddish hues. It’s quite a large pipe, but it isn’t too heavy, and the calabash design allows it to fit in the hand just perfectly. With a big bowl, it’s perfectly suited for a long smoke by the fireplace, but looking as it does, you may want to find an opportunity to take it out with you and show it off.
