Pre-Republic Peterson’s Dublin and London 450, Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates [SOLD OUT]

Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
If you know much about Peterson’s home country, you’ll know that it hasn’t always been formally known as the Republic of Ireland. Owing to a civil war and a long battle for independence from Britain in the first half of the 20th century, Ireland has gone by many names. As such, Peterson pipes have, throughout the decades, been stamped with a number of things, reflecting the Irish quest for self-determination. This makes certain Peterson pipes relatively easy to date, as is the case with this one. Instead of the modern ‘Made in the Republic of Ireland’ stamp, this one is stamped, ‘Made in Ireland.’ This allows us to estimate that the pipe was made before the Republic of Ireland was formed in 1949. Such pipes are highly collectible, especially if you’re a fan of Peterson pipes, or an Irish history buff.
The pipe itself is a long, but very light, billiard, with a vulcanite stem and Peterson’s famous P-lip mouthpiece. It’s also got some beautiful flame grain, accentuated by the light brown-blonde stain it wears. Furthermore, despite its age, this pipe is wonderfully well preserved, with just a touch of inner rim darkening and a tiny nick on the outer rim.
